A new industry engagement team will be launched to support the offshore workforce. Step Change in Safety and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have teamed up to form the Workforce Engagement Support Team (WEST).
The new steering group reflects better practice, according to industry leader Les Linklater.
The Step Change team leader said: “WEST is an amalgamation of Step Change’s Workforce Engagement Group (WEG) and the HSE’s Workforce Involvement Group (WIG). The two groups came together to plan and run the extremely successful Workforce Involvement Day at the Piper 25 conference last year.
“We realised we had these two very similar groups aiming for the same goal, but working independently from each other. Part of safety is simplification and that’s exactly what we did.
“By combining the two organisations and each group’s strengths, we’re simplifying the process. The end goal remains the same. We want to actively and routinely engage with the onshore and offshore workforce as we strive to become the safest oil province in the world.”
WEST will formally launch at a special event on Tuesday, March 11. The event, which will be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC), hopes to bring together 300 members of the oil and gas industry’s community.
The event will feature a range of interactive parallel sessions to encourage safety discussions and sharing of good practice.
Sessions will examine hydrocarbon releases, the size and shape of the workforce, competence, helicopter safety and the role of safety representatives.
RMT regional organiser Jake Malloy, WEST co-chairman Ian Sharp and HSE’s Susan Mackenzie will deliver presentations on the day.
Susan Mackenzie, Head of SHE’s Energy Division said: “After 23 years of regulating safety across most industries, I have rich, first-hand experience of the improvements workers make to safety.
“There needs to be continual improvement and change within the industry to ensure we get safety right offshore. One of my top priorities has been integrating how the HSE and Step Change in Safety engage workers to improve safety. I very much welcome the creation of WEST and I am personally committed to making sure it works to improve safety offshore.”
Ronnie McDonald will deliver the event’s keynote speech.
The event will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
